Very skilled guy in the right place at the right time with the right support and luck. It's kind of funny to me when ppl say MGSV didn't show BB becoming a villain, it's almost Iike they're falling for the in universe propaganda surrounding Big Boss instead of actually looking at his actions since Peace Walker.īig Boss only doesn't look like some overt evil overlord because you're either playing as him or as his biggest fan and surrounded by a cult dedicated to whitewashing Big Boss.įor me the end of and part of the point of MGSV was to warn against the cult of personality and show how insidious it is, even the fans are apart of it.Įveryone acts to further the legend of Big Boss as this perfect super soldier that should be revered and listened to when really he's not some super special person above us mere humans, he was a By locking them into "yet another Snake wants to build Outer Heaven and wage war on The Patriots" he locked them into "send Solid Snake after Liquid", a predictable pattern they could adapt to and exploit.Įither way it doesn't really change his motivations - Ocelot is a spy who uses and backstabs literally everyone except Big Boss, the one person he is really loyal to. Taking out the arm & replacing the possession with hypnosis was necessary so he'd stay somewhat in control of his actions.Īs for why pretending to be Liquid was ever actually necessary in the first place - Big Boss mentions The Patriots ultimately follow patterns like any program. Well, it's actually a bit more complex than that - going by the Database you can infer Ocelot was, in fact, literally possessed in 2. It's backwards: 2 establishes Ocelot is possessed by the actual ghost of Liquid, 3 hints at the reason for this being that Ocelot inherited The Sorrow's psychic powers, then 4 says "actually, it was all nanomachines and hypnosis". MGS is an absurd series on principle and in my opinion the best installments in the series embrace the absurdity instead of acting like it's embarrassing. I just don't understand why "Russia's secret spy force includes a man who shoots bees out of his mouth and 100 year old man who is the best sniper in the entire world" and "The secret society running the world is actually just a bunch of hyperintelligent AIs and the only person who can stop them is a 7 year old girl who just so happens to be a hacking prodigy" are considered totally fine and plausible and yet Ocelot getting his brain rewritten by nanomachines is a step too far. It reminds me of the kind of twists you'd see in a Prof Layton game where there's no such thing as magic but then there's a chemical in the town's water supply that somehow explains everything even though there's no fucking way any chemical on Earth could actually do what Layton describes. I still think "Ocelot was never actually possessed by Liquid through nanomachines, he hypnotized himself and he's incredibly susceptible to hypnotic suggestion by being The Sorrow's son" is the one that annoys me the mostīy trying to explain a very silly plot twist, Kojima tries to explain it in a more grounded way that.is actually just as silly as the original twist, and also makes Ocelot's motivations way more muddled and confusing. Wonder if people will be greatly concerned about the very sacred lore of Death Stranding being tarnished by the sequel.ĭoes replaying MGS2 bother you when the president stinger in MGS1 ended up being another evil twin of Solid Snake named Solidus Snake? He is also more pure genetically to Big Boss than the other clones represented by him also wearing an eyepatch. I say just go with the flow, can't wait to see how DS2 turns some random email from Bob East of Eastward Station or whatever into a major plot moment that recontexualises both games. Shit in 4 and V is quite tame in the grand scheme of things. MGS4 in particular riles people up, but the whole franchise is filled with one ass pull after the other. These games are my favourite series ever, but I've never understood how the fandom can be outraged by some retcon moments over any other. They've all been built from a shaky foundation contorting each self-contained game to fit a bigger narrative that barely holds together. I never got why anyone at all ever cared about the retcons in any Metal Gear game, they're all a load of bollocks, and have all been self-referential to the extreme since the first sequel of the series.
